Lobbyists are hoping that Carrie Lam will set up a Children's Commission as stated in her election manifesto. In the SCMP, Billy Wong Wai-yuk (Executive Secretary of the Hong Kong Committee on Children's Rights) has said that the Commission needs to be a statutory body with teeth and not a 'wishy-washy' advisory body. More information in the SCMP article.

The LegCo Subcommittee on Children's Rights is inviting submissions and attendance at their meeting on 20 April at 10.45am.
This is a critical issue for children in Hong Kong. As noted by the Children's Committee on Children's Rights, children have no voting or economic powers they are vulnerable to abuse and manipulation and they do not have access to independent advice and advocacy. Calls for a children's commissioner have been many and varied over the years. If you have views that you would like to share with the Subcommittee please use the link to go to the LegCo website to obtain more information. Sala Sihombing |
